I hear so many quote this as a Bible verse but this is NEVER mentioned in the Bible! I think people are trying to quote:
1 Corinthians 10:13 NASB
13 No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
The words we confirm as true, or the words we take in our ears to mediate on is crucial in how stable we will be as believers. Getting God’s Words right is so important. Do you remember how Satan tempted Eve? He used words.
Genesis 2: 15-17 NASB
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and tend it. 16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Genesis 3 1-5 NASB
Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! 5 For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil.”
Matthew 7:15 NASB
15 “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
I don’t know about you, but I have experienced this encounter in my life. I have been led into conversations where there was an attack waiting for me. I have been set-up in such a way where someone has plotted behind my back in an attempt to make me appear that I did something that I didn’t do. I have been in relationships where someone has been in my presence and pretended like everything was normal or fine, but once light exposed what was hidden in the darkness I found out so many lies existed behind my back. I have walked up on conversations where someone was being honest with another person about what they thought about me, but never brought their truth to me. It is by far one of the strangest things I have encountered. There are times I have walked away from people thinking they have a sick and twisted toxicity with enjoying getting away with something or they are too threatened to be honest so they try a less revealing approach.
2 Corinthians 11: 3-4, 14-15 NASB
3 But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. 4 For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.
14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
I think deception is close to manipulation. For example, Satan may not come up to you and introduce himself to you as Satan, reminding you that he is trying to tempt you so you can walk in sin and veer off the narrow path. The bible says he presents himself as an angel of light.
2 Peter 2 1-3 NASB
2 But false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Many will follow their indecent behavior, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3 and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
1 John 2 4-6 NASB
4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now it is already in the world. 4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world, therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. The one who knows God listens to us; the one who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
Deuteronomy 18 20-22 NASB
20 But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name, a word which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How will we recognize the word which the Lord has not spoken?’ 22 When the prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, and the thing does not happen or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you are not to be afraid of him.
Jeremiah 14:14 NASB
14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them, nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility, and the deception of their own minds.
Deception from teachers and leaders is in the church. I have personally heard leaders misuse God’s Word. I wondered what their motives were for doing it? I have heard people release a “word from the lord” and nothing ever came to pass. I generally think most babes in Christ won’t dare question a leader. I always assumed I didn’t understand something or maybe they just made a mistake; after all we are not perfect. I tried to figure out if they were misleading congregations willingly, or maybe they started off for the right reasons then got off track (money, adultery, selfish gain like self worship), or maybe they were following another leader or mentor instead of God. What ever the case may be I think people can walk away hurt or left feeling unsure. Lesson: NEVER EVER FOLLOW ANOTHER PERSON BEFORE GOD.
To some extent we are all following someone or something we learned, but we should never be too comfortable or complacent when we are sitting under church leadership. I pray for teachers God has anointed!
YouTube is a great example of too many people declaring themselves as teachers or prophets. Way too many. Be careful… Yeshua warned us! I can honestly tell you when I kept praying in understanding His warning He took into intimate studies with Him. He can reveal His Word to you. Maybe not right way, but keep asking, seeking, and knocking and the Holy Spirit will show you. NO MAN BEFORE GOD!
Understandably God has teachers He has called, but we have to ask God for decrement when listening to another person or studying teachings for another person. While I believe outside sources are one avenue to be careful of – what about the inside?
I think the scariest wrongful hearing is when we hear the wrong thing from the inside of ourselves! Yes, Satan is full of lies, but about when we believe it or we lie to ourselves?
I sat around Wednesday, May 19th, extremely sad. I could feel my body hurting. I could feel aches and pains I never had before. I will not resurrect the thoughts I had, but they were horrible thoughts towards myself. I don’t know how I got there and I am not sure where it came from, it was all at once. I was somber and cried most of the day hating my past choices and was struggling with loneliness and fear with words of boundaries for the future.
There I was with a schedule for the week with everything planned out. On this day, I knew exactly what I needed to do and I couldn’t do it. I laid around bruising myself black and blue. I was snappy and angry this day. I entertained these thoughts all day. I was in war and didn’t know it. I was supposed to fight back and I didn’t do anything. And I know better! There are still wounds that need healing. It wasn’t until I read the Bible to my kids at night I got clarity and peace. Then I rebuked Satan out of my mind, heart, and thoughts. Later, I went to the grocery store and saw a friend who also gave me peace and encouragement using God’s Word to give me strength. The best is yet to come is what this friend said to me and also shared their testimony and reminded me God loves us and He considers us, believers, His special people.
God is always there and He sees every step we take. I called out to Him and He delivered me, but I also know that went on for too long because I allowed it to. I believe God is strengthen my faith and allowing me to be in situations to teach me to fight back. The mind is prime real-estate and we have to learn to not give it away so easily. I was prepared to write about some of the Bible stories that are laced with deception; stores like Jacob and Isaac, Jacob and Laban, false prophets, some of the Pharisees, or Eve and Satan. The Bible is loaded with deception and it is still happening today – not much has changed.
However, I took the “honest about myself” road, hoping it gives encouragement to others who are in spiritual warfare or facing a hard day. Deception happened in the Bible and is still happening through external sources, but we can’t forget to check our minds because there it’s hidden, but can be all the more hurtful.
Reach for your Bible always and don’t forget to reach when you feel mentally, socially, or emotionally drained. Always ask Adonai for the strength to use His Word against the noise that’s trying to pollute your minds. We are still called to activate our faith – even on bad days.
Ephesians 6:1-18 NASB
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.18 With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints,
